"I knew a very wise man...He believed if a man were permitted
to make all the ballads, he need not care who should make the
laws of a nation." Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (Scotland, 1703)

Carole King was born Carol Joan Klein on February 9, 1942, to Eugenia and Sidney Klein. Her mother was a teacher, and her father a firefighter. Carol showed a talent for music early on, learning to play the piano before age 10.
King changed her name while attending James Madison High School in the 1950s. She attended Queens College in New York, where she briefly dated Neil Sedaka, who released the song “Oh! Carol!” in 1959. Her response single, “Oh! Neil!,” was not as popular.
